Default Sending tree instead of flowers for funeral-what kind?

My BIL's grandfather just passed away. My nephew's were pretty close to him. Instead of sending flowers to the funeral home, I would like to send a small tree that they can take back home with them and plant in their yard.

Someone did this for my siblings and I when our grandfather died and that tree is still planted at my parent's house. I think it's a fir.

Any suggestions on what kind of tree to get? I will be at the mercy of the florist to some degree but have until Saturday to get it there.

Where do they live (what zone?) I like Maples..perhaps you can look up a local landscape/greenhouse and see if they can help you out.

What about a fruit tree? Someone gave my parents a Meyer lemon tree when my grandmother died and its so nice to be able to enjoy the fruit and think of her.
