Default Kirkland Organic Tomato products in BPA Free cans!!!

Woot! Costco now carries organic diced tomatoes, stewed tomatoes, tomato sauce, and tomato paste all in BPA free cans! I called and asked. I've also seen the same info on a few websites.
The price is excellent too. $5.99 for an 8 pack of tomatoes, or 12 pack of sauce or paste.

Did they mention what they are using as an alternate liner? This blog post made my head hurt. http://safemama.com/2013/01/23/bpa-r...e-as-you-think

Mikala, no I forgot to ask. But they are look exactly the same as the inside of Muir Glen organic tomatoes products. A bright orangey color. Whole Foods too.
And I agree, the whole thing makes me crazy too. I try to avoid cans and use glass or tetra packs whenever possible. But I also like having some pantry back ups as well. And for this price, I'm going for it.

I didn't realize this was a new thing - I saw them a couple weeks ago and picked up the diced tomatoes and the sauce thinking that I must have just not been down that isle in a while.

I can report that the tomato sauce is AMAZING. Bright red, delicious. We just use that can, some garlic salt and some basil for spaghetti sauce these days. An awesome buy.

Thanks! I have been using their organic or the organic S&W canned tomatoes, sauce, and paste for years. I just wish their sauce came in 8 oz. cans as well.

Interesting! I didn't notice this until you posted and I haven't gotten to read up on it yet.

DH gets C&EN, which is trade publication for chemists/chemical engineers. THey had an article in this month about the struggle to find a suitable replacement, and how difficult it is proving to be.

DH has talked to a few folks at conferences studying BPS (sometimes used as a replacement for BPA), and they are saying their research is indicating that may be even worse than BPA based on mouse models.

They did point out in C&EN that whatever replacements come onto the market will likely be scrutinized, so let's hope they find some suitable materials that don't end up problematic down the road.

I can't post the C&EN piece as you need a log in for now, but I think in a few weeks I should be able to link once the article isn't current.

eta: I did see recently that WFs has organic beans in tetrapacks now.
