To all that didn't go...at least you didn't go with your boyfriend who still had a thing for his ex-girlfriend and drove then her home after the prom after she had a fight with her current boyfriend. I didn't really like him all that much (he was good arm candy and a good kisser but that was about as much as I was into him) but I was annoyed. Very annoyed. Never liked her to start with.
At least the prom after that was much better- with now dh.
Keeping in mind this was 1986, ahem. :P
Dress - $30. I bought it off the rack the previous year after prom season was over. It was originally to be used as a recital dress.
Shoes - nothing. I wore a pair of shoes I already had for performances.
Hair - did it myself
Makeup - ditto
Guy's corsage - Less than $10. that's all I recall.
Tickets - For a pair, they were $60, but my date paid for. Which was really nice of him, because he was a good friend, and went to another HS.
For Jr prom, pretty much the same story except a pair of tickets was $50 and I paid for mine.

I went to a teeny tiny high school (17 students in my graduating class) and we didn't have a prom. I could have gone with friends at a nearby larger high school, but I didn't really care for the staying out all night drinking scene that prom was.

I'm a little surprised that people remember how much they spent! I have no clue at all. I feel like I can barely remember what happened last week, let alone 20 plus years ago.

My prom was in 1999 and I went with a male friend since I didn't have a real date to go with. My mom was a single parent and we never had much extra money to pay for dances and stuff, but she did save up and let me splurge and get my dream Jessica McClintock dress! I think it was around $200.
I did my own hair and makeup and I think I had about $40 for dinner, but I think my date paid for that in the end. I don't remember what the ticket price for the dance was but I'll guess $50. Boutonniere was probably $15. I don't think my date paid for me since we were just going as friends. We didn't have a limo or hotel (stayed at my BF's house).
So I'd say about $300 total.
Went to prom in '83 and '84; my dresses were made at home for the cost of the fabric and pattern ($30 ish?). Shoes? Wore some that I already owned. Did my own hair and didn't wear makeup. My parents chipped in for a limo for the '84 date, because we each lived at opposite ends of the county and the party was in DC, at the Mayflower, no less! But the biggest cost? My '84 date had a ticket to a Billy Idol concert that night, and he gave it up to escort me to prom. Because he knew that no one else would be my date. I was "the only Black girl." He got that. Such a sweetheart. Hmmm. Wonder what he's up to now . . . .

I heard what my stepsisters spent on prom and was shocked. I'm sure that there were kids at MY prom (18 years ago) who spent in the upper-hundreds but I spent around $100 for the tickets (though I seem to feel like that number is a little high; it might have been less), my mother & I found my dress & bra at Macy's for less than $100 and I bought shoes at PayLess for $15.
I spent $20 on makeup (did it myself, at home) and did my own hair.
I also spent about $10 on a boutonnier for my escort.
So, total money I laid out personally? $150.
We did not take a limo (we actually carpooled with a friend who lived near my escort's parents' place and offered to chip in for parking & gas), did not pay for professional photos, and did not spend a weekend down the shore like many kids in my class did.
I think I still have the dress, but it's a cheap, mass-produced, off-the-rack thing, very 1990's, that I don't think DD would ever wear, so maybe I should establish it as a dress-up dress! (Or try & make it over as a princess dress, but I don't know that I'm skilled enough.)
Austin Scarlett, on the other hand, made his date's dress, modified bits of his ensemble, paid for professional (NYC) makeup, rented an old-fashioned cab instead of a limo, and looked so 70s superfab that I am royally PISSED I never got a photo with him that night. He was so pretty!!
