We use this http://www.amazon.com/Sterilite-1960.../dp/B002BA5F4I stored under DS' bed. Like a PP said, I like the wide shallow bin because it enables them to dig around. We have a mixture of sets and lots of random pieces that were handed down from friends. All instructions from sets get saved in this http://shop.lego.com/en-US/LEGO-Port...eplate-2856206 and the kids each have their own small container like this http://www.amazon.com/Storage-Assort.../dp/B008LIUS5A to keep whatever in - small pieces they don't want to lose, pieces they are building with, whatever. Those get closed and tossed in the underbed bin.

Last time we were at IKEA we bought a Trofast system for Lego storage, but we haven't actually sorted the bricks yet. Eventually we'll get around to it. Something I did just buy for toy storage (for Magnatiles and Duplos primarily) in our family room, though, is a piece from the Windham collection from Target. We actually have two pieces from that line in our house--one in teal and one in green, and they are beautiful! Each piece comes in tons of colors, too, so you could probably find something that matches your decor. I just thought I'd throw that out there because I am seriously in love with those, they aren't terribly expensive (I bought mine on sale plus a coupon discount), and you can fit a lot of different kinds of bins in them. I bet the TV stand would even be a good height to build on top of.

    Thanks, Everyone!
I do really like the stuff in the Windham collection that you posted, keh602, but I'm not sure there's a color there that would work in our space.
This morning I checked out TJMaxx, Pier 1, Walmart, and a local furniture store; I found a few tables at Pier 1 that might work- this one is my favorite because of all of the drawers.

I know it's a nightstand, but I think it would be fine to put the back end against the arm of our sectional (where the white plastic Lego drawers are now) and have the drawers facing out so the kids can pull them open. I know it seems like overkill for Lego storage, but I really do want the living room to be more kid-friendly; right now almost all of the kids' toys are downstairs in the play area, but we almost never go down there because the kids want to be upstairs with us, where the action is (it's where we're usually hanging out between meals and such). I would put the Legos downstairs but we have very plush carpet down there that eats/ hides the Legos easily, and the kids' rooms also have that carpet, so I don't think it would be good to have them in there. Upstairs we have wood floor and a non-plush area rug, so it's easy to see the brightly colored Legos, and they can use the coffee table to make bigger creations.

I guess another option would be to get a bunch of baskets to put on our wooden ladder shelf that's leaned against the nearby wall. Right now we have decorative things on it like candle holders, pictures in frames, statues, a decorative plate, little clock, etc. I could put a bunch of baskets on there, but I like the ideas of drawers that the kids can pull out; the Lego containers we have now have tiny little sections, which are good for all of the tiny pieces.

Any other ideas, please keep them coming!

Years ago, I bought plastic shoe box sized bins with kids and we sorted Legos by color into the bins. We still have those, and they often sit there untouched bc many Legos are just loose in several big bins.

We just started Legos so for now, they can only do one set at a time. I even kept the box and would put the pieces in a ziplock which goes back into the box.

Under bed storage bin. No need to dump them all out. Easily can see everything---and then its all hidden when done.

We have one big bin for Duplos, and another big bin for Mega Bloks. This system works for both my 3.5yo and myself.
