Some friends of ours told us about a great swim program their daughter (also 8) loves and they would be willing to take DD1 for me as it starts at 4:15 (and I work until 4, 20 miles away with a 30-45 minute commute) and it looks promising, but it is $429 for 26 lessons over a 13 week period (2x a week) At first I thought it was kind of expensive, but it is really what DD1 needs as it is a swim program, but not a full on swim team, which she is not ready for (and honestly I am not sure we have time for) and it is for 1:45 minutes so the $16.50 lesson works out to being much cheaper than most of the other private programs available here, most are $26 per lesson for 20-30 minutes.
Eta: I pay $24 ($12 per kid) for a 30 minute small group lesson (up to 3 kids per lesson) in a backyard pool for my girls each summer, but DD1 is ready for more. I think I will be able to swallow the price more if I can pay on a monthly basis because that is how I budget for most things.
