REAL!!! Only, only real!!! We go to a tree farm. Some years we hike around in October and tag our tree. Most years we hike around in knee deep snow, and we're picky, so it takes a while! We cut the tree down ourselves and hike it back to the car. It's never more than 1/2 a mile to hike, but it feels like a bit of an effort for sure, especially carrying the tree, and that's how we like it! We do use fake wreaths and garlands to decorate our upper outdoor balcony. Otherwise, all our greens are real.
ETA: I have no qualms about cutting down trees for Christmas. It's not like anyone is cutting down forests. Tree farms grow (and shape) the trees specifically for Christmas cutting, and it's a big local business around here, so we feel good about supporting our local economy. We also don't leave Christmas decorations up past January 6th or put them up before December 1st-- usually a couple weeks later-- so that's not an issue for us either.
