Not sure if it's on prime but the West Wing was a great smart, sometimes funny political drama.

These are interesting and fun but not dark/intense:
    Parenthood
    Alias
    Downton
    Mad Men
    Lost

I was in the same boat a few months ago after being done with the good wife and these are the shows I watched and loved-
    Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries
The Fall (BBC thriller, not sure it fits you criteria though)
    Call the Midwife

I bought the first episode of Outlander on amazon and I am hooked, but now it does not show me the option to buy the season, something buggy there. But that is next on my list.

I also watched 2 episodes of Transparent, but I am not going to continue to watch it, it depresses me, everyone is messed up and there is so much explicit sex and somehow not the dreamy romantic kind that I prefer!

I like the Good Wife but right now prefer Madame Secretary. I have re-watched the West Wing on Prime. I don't like violence but somehow DH got me to watch the first episode of season three of Sons of Anarchy. I am hooked. I am watching it from two directions. I have already watched season three and four, now into season 5, but DH has also made me start at season 1 so halfway through that. It is such a good show even with a lot of violence.

I also like Nashville, but DH won't watch it.

Yes, I liked Newsroom quite a bit, too and agree with the comparison to West Wing re:dialogue and character development. My Dh liked Orphan Black, but I could never get into it. I've also liked Suits and Grimm, though I'm not usually a fan of scifi/fantasy.
    Ds1 (2006). Ds2 (2010). Ds3 (2012).

There is a very very dark scene in season 5 of SOA, look away if you can! I don't want to say anymore, but you'll know it when you come to it, and look away! Boy I wish seeing Charlie Hunnam!!!

Masterpiece Mystery: Endeavour (nice post-war period piece. It's a young inspector Morris.)
    Masterpiece Mystery: Inspector Lewis
As far as fantasy/Sci Fi Suggestions:
Dead Like Me (funny and weird)
I've assummed you have watched Buffy
Fringe (OMG, what a great under-rated show! John Noble is brilliant.)
Please tell me you seen the new Dr. Who
