The Foonf is still good, the Chicco Nextfit is awesome (esepcially the zipper one), the new Britax seats, the Peg Perego convertible, and of course the Diono's are still good if space is an issue.

This one seems to be love or hate, so definitely have her put your niece in it and take her out a couple of times -- preferably with the seat in her vehicle. It is very cushy and DS rode happily in it for a 15+ hour each way road trip at 15 months! But the high sides can make it hard to get him in/out without bumping his head (I'm sure this is very vehicle dependent) and the harness straps are REALLY hard to tighten (which I've heard may have been improved since our early model).
We loved our KeyFit and so we really wanted to love the NextFit, but honestly just don't. I made DH put it into his car and got a Graco 4Ever for mine
DS 2/14
DD 8/17
Here are the top recommended seats for each type.
