Default Recommendations for ear plugs or ear muffs?

DS gets way overstimulated with loud or too much noise. He holds his hands over his ears, and typically has a tantrum or outburst of aggression if we can't get him out of there.

So... I think it's time to see if earmuffs or earplugs will work for him. Anyone have favorites for a toddler? He's 4.5 yro.

The Peltor is what we used for a few years. Eventually I got custom ear plugs made for him from a place that does hearing aids (about $100-$150 not sure of exact) they take a mold of the ear and they are what drummers wear.

I got him the adult size Peltor but they also make kid ones. He didn't mind the bulk and size

We have both custom musician plugs ($180 for the pair) and standard Phonak ear plugs ($15 for the pair). DC prefers the phonak for most situations (movies, birthday parties, crowded areas). Since she tends to lose them, it's a good thing! We pull out the musician plugs for stage shows, fireworks; the really loud stuff . With both DC is able to participate in conversations. We got them at an audiologist. There are many things we would have to leave if we didn't have them!

However, we didn't get them until she was twelve so she is able to tolerate them and puts them in herself.

We have used the Peltor kids ear muffs for a while. Got them on Amazon. I think they are good to start with to see how he tolerates then you can look into custom plugs. My DC, now 7 & 9, have been using the same ones for 4-5 years.

My daughter has a big head (seriously, we had to do the MRI and everything) and I bought these after a harrowing public bathroom experience. They muffle enough that she doesn't flip out, but she can still hear people talking to her, etc. We also sent a pair to kindergarten and we call them her "magic headphones." They've helped us out with everything from public bathrooms to fire alarms. And the price is right.
