We have had an LG front loader for 9 years and a Maytag gas dryer for 15. Both are great. The only downside to all things LG is that most local repair guys can't fix them, so you end up having to use Sears repair and they are a real PITA, we have a 2 year old Kenmore Elite (LG) fridge and the process of getting the compressor fixed through sears has thrown me off all Sears products forever.

I would get whatever brand your local trusted repair person can fix.

This is actually a really great point. We have a great appliance repair company here but they only service certain brands (GE is not included!!) so I think it's a really good idea to focus your brand search that way.

Annoyingly, that's BFF's estranged hubby (aka DH's BFF, who isn't talking to him), so it's hard to get his opinion on what to get and/or what he can fix!
