That's how ours is, too. Except kindergarten finds out a couple days earlier so they can meet the teacher the day before school.

The lists are posted on the doors of the school the Friday before the week of orientation. Orientation is held one day during the week before school starts.

The school mails the class list for the whole grade right after 4th of July. The teacher also usually sends a letter in August and we usually also get email before the school year starts. This is for elementary school.

In middle school, we get a letter sometime during the summer.

we have fee day about 1.5-2 weeks before school starts (fee day was thurs Aug 11 and they started tues 23). You go in, fill out all the paperwork (emergency contacts, nurse forms), pay PTA dues, add money to the cafeteria accounts, get your bus times and then when you are all done you pay your school fee and get the slip which has the teacher name. The kids then go to school and after a few days you have back to school night (it's Thursday so the 3rd day of school) and you meet the teachers etc).

Our independent charter school has a back-to-school picnic a week before school starts. When you first arrive, you go to the check in table run by parent volunteers and are given an envelope with your child's name on it. Inside, it tells you who your teacher is. We only have 264 students (k-5) and just 2 classrooms per grade so it's a pretty easy process (no long waits or anything). The teachers are all at the picnic so you can go up and say hi to your new teacher, say hi to teachers past, and just mingle with the other parents and kids.

Same goes for DS1's middle school (which is part of the same charter, but separate campus). The kids get an envelope with the name of their advisory teacher inside. We have 256 kids on the 6-8 middle school campus.

Elementary public school - it's posted to the child's account on an online portal the Friday before school starts, 2 days ahead of time. They used to be posted outside the school but they stopped doing so for privacy reasons.

Same for elementary but the class lists have an id number, not the kid name, for privacy.

For MS three weekdays before school starts the kids turn in their forms (medical insurance, contact info, etc.) to pick up their schedule. At that time they also buy PE clothes (not required) and turn in PTA forms. They can also make schedule requests that day, which we did, but it still took the school until the fourth school day to get his schedule right (grr!)
