If you like the magic angle, try some Naomi Novik. She did Uprooted, which I loved, and apparently has done a historical series which uses dragons for warfare in the era of Napoleon - which I am looking into.

Looking on Goodreads, people seem to have a love/hate thing with this book - you either love it or detest it. https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/22544764-uprooted

I just got Uprooted from the library today. I'm about 20 pages in so far. So far so good!

It's not historic, but you might also like Wen Spencer's Elfhome series. Strong female characters, some romance, action, magic, elves, and she does a lot of research for her writing. There are Japanese cultural references, which I enjoy - the only bad thing I can say is that one of the cover art pieces isn't my taste. Minor quibble. Tinker, the first, is my favorite. Wen Spencer, Juliet Marillier, and Elizabeth Moon are my favorite authors.

It's funny because I'll sometimes not read a book because of the cover art.

Here is the one I didn't like - looks like it was meant to appeal to the non-uterus crowd. The book itself was good- I just was embarrassed to be seen with it.

If I saw you with this book, I definitely would have wondered what you were reading. LOL!

I would recommend the Kricket series, the Marking Time series, the Premonition series. All are exceptionally fantastic!

I found a book on Amazon called Marking Time by April White. Is this the 1st book of
    the Immortal Descendants series?

I'm glad you liked it! I need to look into that dragon series too, but Wen Spencer's latest is waiting for me on the library holds shelf first.

ETA- Black Wolves of Boston. Werewolves set on the modern day east coast, witches, vampires; should be a good read, too!
