Fly straight into Traverse City if you can afford it. No sense driving from Detroit if you can avoid. Another option is to fly into Milwaukee and take the lake express across to Muskegon and drive up the west coast, but not sure if that saves you much over Traverse, which is super convenient. We are in Chicago and we have flown in and out of Traverse when we've been making a quick trip up north and didn't want to spend 8 hours in the car each way.
Agreed on Traverse City, but I suspect it's pricey. If it's out of the budget, check Detroit or Grand Rapids (GRR). Grand Rapids is about 2 1/2 hours south of Sleeping Bear Dunes, from there you're almost to the bridge.

I bet you can get a deal flying into Traverse. My dad flies out of there all the time rather than drive to GR or Chicago/Detroit and I know he wouldn't do that it if was much more expensive.
