    Default Icing on cake?

I’m completely hopeless in the baking department. DS2 usually prefers cupcakes to celebrate his birthday and I stick candles on it. But he requested the sponge cake that I started to make for the family dinners every now and then.

It’ll be your basic sponge cake with sugar sprinkled on top of it but I want to write happy birthday on it. How do I do it? And what supplies would I need??

    Mods can you move it?

I wouldn't try to write "Happy Birthday" on a sponge cake that you won't be icing, but if you want to do it in icing, buy a tube of premade decorator icing. It's sold in the baking aisle near the candy cake decorations and comes in a few colors; it's vanilla flavored, but I always think it tastes funny. Kids like it, though.

Another option is to get a "Happy Birthday" pick - these will be located near the party supplies in places like Target, or by the greeting cards & birthday candles in the grocery story.

I would actually recommend the pick over the icing, as it's easier and looks a bit more impressive than the writing.

Our tradition is spelling out kid’s name and their age in m&ms. I have been adding one of those Happy Birthday banners lizzy described.
I don’t bother trying to write with frosting. I’m just not good at it.

What about using those candy letters?

That’s brilliant!!!! Boys don’t like chocolate but I can easily substitute this with DS2 favorite candy; skittles! He doesn’t get it too often so that’ll be a big treat for him.

This is totally my strategy as well!
