Default Do your children have a counselor at school?

None of the school's that my children have attended have ever had a school counselor. I didn't have one either until high school. We had "counselors" but they just picked our classes for us. Were they supposed to also have some counseling function or is this a separate position? Anyway, I was curious as it seems like this is a common assumption that a counselor is to be found at school when we've never had access to a counselor and I don't think any of the local elementary schools have one either. I'm searching right now to see if our comprehensive middle schools or high schools have them. Would love to hear your experience!

Yes, every school has had at least one. Very invaluable resources.

Yes, all of the public schools in our state (MO) have counselors. Our building has 2. They give individual students support as needed and also do character ed type lessons for classes.

My children’s K-4 school has 2. I’m not sure if they are both full time or rotate to the other k-4 buildings in our district (there are 2 others). They are regularly in the classrooms teaching lessons about self esteem, bullying etc.

All of my nearby schools have something, either a counselor, school psychologist, or social worker. The one in our school is a psychologist and she spent several months doing a once per week class session in DS's class because there were issues.

Our public elementary school has a counselor and each class goes to her once a week. I’m not sure what topic is covered each class but I know they have at least discussed bullying.

K-6th schools in my district have counselors. 3 schools for different grades, and each one has one assigned plus a social worker too for K-3rd grade school but also covers 2 other schools up to 6th grade. HS has a licensed psychologist and guidance counselors (4 I think)

Yes. My kids' elementary has 2; one full time and one part time. though our school is lucky -- in NC, most schools are way off of the recommended ratios.
