Denver hotel/area recommendation

DH will be in Denver for one night. He flies in early one morning and out the following evening. He should have plenty of downtime while he's there. He'd prefer to avoid renting a car, if possible. I'm looking for recommendations for a good place to stay. It would be great to find something in a very walkable area with decent dining options. Does such an area exist in Denver? It doesn't have to be too close to the airport given that he'll have a lot of time to get to and from the airport!

Denver light rail runs from inside the airport to downtown Union Station, which is super walkable. A local might have more specific recommendations. I always want to take the train when we visit the in-laws, but they love in the burbs, and it isn't as convenient.
