Default Kids and pick up trucks

Would you let an average (maybe a little on the short side) 7 yr old ride in a pick up truck (front seat, middle seatbelt so no shoulder belt) for about 3 hrs?
We are going to a lake for a family reunion this weekend, but my immmediate family can only go for the last 2 days. I agreed to let DS ride up with my sister tomorrow, 2 days before us, but now she isn't going. My options are let him go in my parents pick up truck or disappoint him and tell him he isn't going tomorrow after all.
Their truck doesnt have air bags, but the main worry is that he won't have a shoulder belt, just the lap. He's in a low-back booster.

I wouldn’t. And I think it’s probably illegal besides being unsafe. I’d check the laws in your state.

Yeah, I've been reading a bit more and it sounds like a no-go safety wise!

Why does he have to ride n the middle? Tell them he needs to ride with the shoulder belt

This is what I was thinking - adult will be less comfortable, but they can legally ride in middle

My dad will be driving and my mom gets horribly carsick if not by a window. We will just keep him home until we go up.

Do you have a 5pt seat he can fit into ? That would work as they can be installed w/just a lap belt.

I'd be torn on this one b/c not that long ago that lap/only belts were the norm. but 3h is a long ride to not be as safe as possible...

Yes, the only way I would do it is if you have a harnessed seat he can still fit into that can be installed there. It is the only safe thing to do with a lap only belt.
