Twin is perfectly fine.

I found DD2’s Stanley Young America bed on Craigslist for $250!

I think twin is fine. Esp since the room seems on the smaller side. Its what I had till past college. Painting the furniture will make the room look nicer - more 'put together' but if you cant, its not such a big deal.
