Kids in my 8th grade were doing that. I graduated from 8th grade thirty years ago. I would rather let them hear about it from the movie and then have a discussion as opposed to not talking about it all.

I agree. Kids were doing that by 6th grade. But I also learned about them when I was 8 (some older girls filled me in). Would rather have my kids have the discussion with me than with other kids. And fwiw, I grew up in a HCOL area with highly educated and involved parents.

We watched this movie last night with my almost 13 year old. I thought I would post here to update. It is definitely a must watch for the 7-8th grade crowd. The whole bj mention is quite brief and does not take away from the movie. Is the social media presence over exaggerated? YES! But lots of good conversation. Lots of little jokes that only a middle schooler would get.
I would imagine that high school kids would have a harder time relating to it as they are past that age. It's definitely a middle school movie.
I am glad we watched at home as opposed to the theater. Easy to stop and discuss issues. It's free on Prime. Definitely a sweet coming of age movie.
Thanks so much! I completely forgot about this one, but will have to watch with Dd1.
