Question Best price on Halloween candy/ Best bang for your buck stuff to hand out?

We moved from a place with acreage and no trick-or-treaters, to one with 80 or so houses in the neighborhood, and tons of kids. I'm super excited for our first Halloween here, but have no idea how much candy to get, and wondering how I can get the best deal.

Is there a certain candy or other thing to buy that kids love? Before we had kids and lived in a more populated neighborhood, we handed out glow sticks and little trinkets from Target (like Oriental Trading Co. would sell). I'd like to be sensitive to kids with allergies, too, so maybe get fruity stuff?

If you buy candy, what do you buy, and where have you seen it for the best price? Target/ Walmart/ Aldi/ Walgreens/ CVS/ Dollar Store/ somewhere else? We don't belong to Costco, so I'd probably avoid that unless it's such a good deal, it's worth getting a membership again. . Is there a best time to buy it when it would be more on sale?

    Thanks for your tips!

We've bought a giant bag of Dum Dums in the past from Sam's. It might have been 7 lbs? 10? It was huge.

No practical suggestions but a funny memory .... when I was first married (eons ago), we moved into a neighborhood like you describe. We woefully underestimated the amount of candy needed for the nonstop trick-or-treaters, but it was hard to turn off the lights while they were still streaming up the front walk. So after we ran out of candy, we grabbed all the apples and bananas in the kitchen, but still they came. We finally resorted to handing out carrots At that point, the word started to spread so we could turn off all the lights and hide!

Buy the variety of mini candy bars (Twix, milky way, Hershey etc). Look at places like Costco, Sam's for a good deal. Kids like candy bars. I let kids pick two or three, but we only get 30 kids. My kids still go to the neighborhood where they give out full size candy bars.

Kids will avoid that house! Sorry, dum dums are the worst per kids around here. If you do them, I’d have something a little better to supplement.

Yes, spring for candy bars if you are doing candy. Kids like the candy bars and more than one. Don’t cheap out if you are going to participate. We have a fun neighborhood for Halloween and it doesn’t break the bank usually. Target or even big chain grocery stores usually have decent deals on bags of candy bars. Many people here give full size, we don’t but do a handful vs one piece. Have fun!

I always buy mini candy bars and let people take 2 (3 if traffic is light). I usually buy some gummies of some sort as they tend to be have fewer allergen risks. I used to keep a bowl with play doh and stickers too and a lot of people liked those as well.

My kids love lollipops. So, no blanket statements really can apply! Must work for pp too.
Eta- I don’t think my kids would ever avoid a house. They’ll take all the candy.

I just get big bags from Costco or Target. The price difference is really not that significant.

I'm with you. My kids don't keep track of what house gives out what candy. They do the same route every year, and go to all of the houses with lights on. We give out chocolates, the "good stuff" and I have pretty much the same kids every year, so I don't think the word's out that we're a "good" house. It's just not a thing around here.
