Default Gotta vent - PE teacher

DS got kicked in the knee in a soccer game and has been off PE for awhile. He’s to see a specialist after Thanksgiving. I think his PE teacher doesn’t believe he’s hurt as he doesn’t have an “obvious limp”. He assigned DS alternative assessment which is just busy work and he didn’t have to do this when he broke a bone last year. DS usually gets easy A in PE, but he’s now getting a F as he’s been absent some days so has to do physical makeups for missed days, but he’s not yet cleared for physical activity, and I don’t know when he’ll be cleared.

This is a kid that plays sport year round, he already met end of year requirements for run/push ups etc when school started. Cut him some slack.

Does he have a note from the doctor? If so, that's unacceptable. I would go right over the PE teacher to the principal.

He has a dr note. He doesn’t have to do PE, but he has to do the alternate assessments if assigned.

He does have to do make ups for days absent - you do 30 mins of activity at home and parent signs it. He was told to do them when he’s cleared for PE, and I don’t know when that will be.

All this is in the syllabus. DS teacher last year didn’t require it.

I’ll see about getting the make up for absences waived if he’s going to be out for too long as he’ll never be able to make them up.

I would talk to the teacher and if that doesn’t work the principal. If he has a dr’s note he shouldn’t have to do activities. Otherwise I’d be the parent that just signs off that he did all the physical activity at home and call it good.

I’m totally that parent too. I’ll do that once he’s cleared. But DS usually does so much sport, it’ll be easy to make up.I just don’t know when it’ll be. I’ll see about getting the missed activities waived when we’re back after Thanksgiving for the period he’s been out of PE. Hoping specialist appointment gives us an idea how much longer he’ll have to wait to be cleared.

The alternative assessments DS is stuck with. We just have a lot going on, he’s been at dr several times each week, that it’s just one thing too many. His other teachers have been great about giving him more time. PE teacher is not helping. Doesn’t help that medication DS is on makes you confused and loopy, he’s forgetting to hand things in too.

We’re still part way through a backyard project so there’s all these questions and details that I really don’t care about right now. DH is mostly dealing with that. I’ve missed too much work because of DS’ injury, administrator has been understanding, but that doesn’t change legal timelines for everything that’s due. We’re also not sleeping well as DS meds make him anxious and he’s scared about his leg, so he’s been sleeping with us. He’s bigger than me!!!

I need it all to go away!!!

    That totally stinks!

Yes, get the principal on your side.

DS2 once was told by a PE coach that he couldn't be hurt that badly and to shake it off. Yeah, his collar bone was broken dude.

Oh I'm annoyed for you. The good news is that he's still in middle school, right? The grades don't matter TOO much but the principle of the thing would really irk me. My DS1 would have had a hard time getting his stuff together for makeups if he had to wait a significant time to do it. Can you ask for an alternative assignment?

We have found that teachers and schools DO NOT always believe medical excusal notes. It's not their place to question them, but, in our experience, they often do.

Can you contact the gym teacher directly and express your concerns? Even better, ask that the doctor contact the teacher to let him know why your DC cannot participate. CC the principal on all communication and call a meeting with both the teacher and the principal, if necessary.

Your child has a MEDICAL reason that he cannot participate in gym at this time. THAT should NOT affect his grade. I can actually see the school giving him an "incomplete", but not a poor grade!

Honestly, I would offer up a "research paper". See what health topic your child would be interested in researching and have him do a paper or presentation in lieu of gym. But let him go to the library during gym to do the work!

    Good luck

PS This is assuming he has a medical release from the doctor. If not, you need to get one ASAP and have the doctor call to make sure that the document is retroactive to the injury date.
