DD has both a homeroom period (take attendance, listen to AM announcements, socialize) and what her school calls "academic support" periods, which she is supposed to use to visit teachers for extra help. It could, hypothetically, serve as a writing lab.
It's not a structured class and I think having to write something like your kids do would break her, so I'd much rather she used the time to brainstorm essay ideas or learned to take notes or something she'll need in high school.
