Default Best app for touring NYC

We have friends visiting who will be touring on their own. Is Google maps the best for figuring out subways?

I use Google Maps in NYC but I know others that prefer City Mapper
My tip is to screenshot the directions before you get into the subway and text them to the group in case you get separated and lose connection

Some people on another group I'm on like the app called Rome 2 Rio. I've never used it so can't say whether it's good or not though.

The Wanderlust app is also fabulous. It can optimize your itinerary and then provides the navigation.

We were in NYC in November and used Google maps for navigation without any problems. We walked at least 30,000 steps per day and rode the subway all over. I originally tried to organize our itinerary using the Wanderlust app but didn't find it worked for my trip planning style. YMMV.

The Smith is across from Lincoln Center. It's pretty good and has something for everyone.

Citymapper app is great. It gives you the public transportation options as well as walking, Uber, taxi, etc. I find their walking directions are much easier than Google maps. City mapper also knows when trains, busses are arriving at the closest stop so factors that in to the time each option will take and you can refresh for updates.
