Even in the lowest position, the babies look like they could easily hurl themselves out of thier crib if they thought about it... at what age did you take the crib away for good? and did your baby ever climb out? how old was your baby when he/she climbed out for the first time?
Right now, we're just using it to put them in a safe place while I shower since I'm alone... so once you take the cribs away, what do you do with the babies to make sure they're safe when you can't keep your eyes directly on them? We have a pnp in the basement, but I'm guessing they would jump out of that too. Plus, with 2 babies, they exceed the weight limit, so we'd probably need 2... what to do... what to do... susan twin girls 7.20.02 charlotte + else http://sunger2.home.comcast.net/bash/nonflash/year.html |

We actually transitioned DD from the crib at 18 months because her armpits were well above the top of the crib and she was starting to learn how to 'climb' up straight surfaces. It was a pre-emptive strike but worked well.
DS is even taller than DD (at the same age) and yesterday at 16 months he was at least 34 inches, maybe 34.5 (too much wiggling involved for accurate measurement)! So we are already working on planning the transition for him at 18 months as well. He is an even better climber (probably because he has his big sister as an example) and I just know he will be falling out of the crib soon if we don't do something about it. If you do decide to transition, there are a number of good discussions about this on the Toddler Board. |

We already had this happen. DD climbed out just a week or so ago at 11 months. We actually had the crib on the middle setting, which was our fault. We thought she could NEVER get out! Wrong. She climbed out and fell on her back on the hardwood floors in her room. I was so upset and so freaked out and thankfully she is okay with no concussion! That same day the crib went ALL the way down so be careful!

Both my older 2 I transitioned out early but I think I will wait as long as possible with Eliza, I think I transitioned them out too early, I wouldn't do it before 18 months again.
Anyway ds first climbed out at 11 months old and the poor kid hit his head! He was officially out of the crib at about 12-13 months but hated the toddler bed so he ended up sleeping with us a lot until he got older and we put him in a big bed. Dd we transitioned out at about 14 months because she always banged into the sides of the crib and woke herself up. She was just a restless sleeper and she also hated the toddler bed so we put her in a big girl bed at about 15 months and she also sometimes sleeps with us. As for what to do with them when you shower, either I took a shower at night while dh was home or I took some books and toys into the bathroom and took them into the bathroom with me and shut the door to keep them contained. When Daria was old enough to be out of the crib sometimes I let ds keep an eye on her in her room which was next to the bathroom for a few minutes but generally I took her in the bathroom with me. |

Well ds came out of his crib once as the habit of climbing out of it was constant, so he was 2.5yrs by that point, my son really liked his crib so behaved fine in it for quite awhile but once as he started climbing in/out we felt the risk of him getting hurt was too great so the crib came down.
My only suggestion would be a baby proofed gated off room.. :) ~Pamela Mom Of 3 http://instagiber.net/smiliesdotcom/...blobflower.gif |
