Default Advice from those who cut their son's hair...

I have attemped (and failed miserably all times :)) to cut both my son and my daughter's hair. I've given up all hope on ever successfully trimming my daughter's hair (she's 4), but am holding out hope that I may still be able to do my son's (he's 1).

I was wondering if anyone out there has used one of those electric trimmers on their child's hair (that's what they used at the salon to cut my son's hair, and it looked like even I could do it)? If so, is it easy? What brand/type of trimmer would you recommend? Thanks so much!

Oh gosh, I am not the best one to talk to on this subject. We cut DS's hair for about a year until DH kept taking off too much with the clippers one night - he ended up with a buzz cut. Ever since, we just go out to Great Clips. It is quicker, less clean-up, and no more arguments between DH and myself :)

I'm going to order these and give them a shot.

We've been trimming DS's hair ourselves, but can't quite figure out the back. He's starting to look like he has a mullet, so I'm going to try these clippers and see if we can take care of that! If not, it's off to the barber.

I'll let you know how they work out.

I've been cutting my DS's hair (& DH's) for about 3 years now. DH's is easy, because he has a buzz cut (his hair naturally just sticks straight out from his head, so I can't picture any other style working). DS's both have your basic boy haircut with trimmers used in back & scissors on top. Don't give up on your DS - give yourself time to practice.

I originally bought a basic trimmer set from Walmart or something. Wahl brand, I think. It came with 4 length attachments, two ear attachments, scissors & comb, & an instructional video. It was about $15 & lasted about 2 years. I replaced it with a better quality one (Conair brand?) with 8 length attachments which now allows me to cut DS's hair only using the trimmers, without doing a buzz cut. If you get one with an instructional video, it's really quite easy. Oh - I also invested (another ~$10) in a mustache trimmer for doing around the ears - a lot easier than trying to use the big trimmers around little boy ears. I don't know what brand that is but I can't imagine there's a lot of difference in quality. I got one of the cheapest ones & it works great.

There have been a couple other posts about this topic that you might want to search for.

i cut dh's hair and it is very easy.. i am about to attempt ds's hair soon. i am loooking for trimmers for kids. i wonder how quiet the pp clippers are?? ds is afraid of getting his hair cut. good luck. as long as ds sits for awhile i think you would be able to do it. it wasn't hard to learn on dh.. good luck.

We use the same clippers on Toby as my husband uses for himself. I use a 3/4 guard and then take scissors to the stray hairs over the ears. I paid for it a few times and my version is cuter.

****Rocking out while parenting my smart little munchkin Toby. Just trying to do good in the world, a little at a time. Words to live by: it is *never* the wrong time to do the right thing :)

Neither of my clippers are especially quiet - but I never thought about it. I wonder if they make clippers that are quieter for kids?

The link I attached in my first post is for "quiet" clippers from One Step Ahead. I haven't tried them yet, but they market them as quiet.

Thanks, everybody. I think that I'm going to take a deep breathe, and just do it...my son's hair is currently sticking straight out around his head--it's about an inch long, and looks like a glowing halo when it catches the sunlight--not that he's not a angel and everything, but something has to be done :). Thanks for the recommendations!
