Default I've Decided I'm Cursed!--UPDATE--maybe the curse is over.....

UPDATE: I am now the proud owner of a 5 yr old washing machine with a brand new transmission. My machine had completely stopped agitating. Now it works great and I'm so happy to be able to get laundry done (sad, isn't it that finishing laundry makes me happy...).

------------------------------------------------
My washing machine just broke last night. Sears comes tomorrow to fix it. It no longer spins. My fridge makes these high pitched whirring sounds like it is laboring and I fear it is about to go. These appliances were bought NEW from Sears in 2004. They are just over 5 yrs old. This should not be happening. I truly wonder which one will start acting up next? My choices are gas dryer, electric oven, microwave or gas oven. The dishwasher (the only appliance we did not replace when we moved in) works like it is in mint condition! To top it off, our service contract expired and DH did not want to renew!

Oh no, I hope it's a simple fix.
I'm in the opposite boat, I'm longing for something to break, so I have a good reason to replace. But they just keep chugging along. Our dryer stopped working and I was but it was a simple fix, and 2 years later it's still working.

I need these appliances to keep working (but I would be ok getting a new fridge if the need be since I HATE what we picked out 5 yrs ago).

We just had to replace our stove last weekend and our fridge yesterday. Plus we'd already replaced our washer and dryer in the fall. Everything was < 10 years old too!

What is it with things not lasting. Our fridge and stove are 15+ years. We should replace because of energy ineffeciency, but I want to redo the kitchen as the cabinets are in such bad shape, so I'm waiting until we do that. But I'm also worried that whatever we get, won't last very long. Friends have had issues with newer appliances always breaking. My older ones might use more energy, but they're not being replaced as often, so maybe they are more efficient in the long run.

It always works out this way, doesn't it? I think there's a transmitter or something that the home office sends a ping to the appliance or something and says "maintenance contract over; fail now."

Our dish washer that came with the house (so 20-something years old) is also working like it's new. The fridge? Eh.

Good luck, so sorry!

Oh, the good 'ol days....

My mother had the same avacado green washer/dryer set for thirty years. They never did die; she just got tired of the icky '70s green and wanted new ones. (She gave them away to a friend to use in his rental house.)
She bought new ones at Sears;when they went to try to sell her a extended warrentee, she said no, she treats them well and she hadn't replaced them in years, the salesperson actually told her "You'll need it this time, no one makes them that well anymore"!

I totally believe that. I cannot believe the amount of service we have had on 5 yr old appliances to date. This is the 3rd time for the washer I believe. Dryer belt once, Fridge water twice already and now the motor seems to be going. WE have a really old fridge in the basement that the old owners left. We may be using it if ours goes south soon.

What brand did you get so I can avoid it?

The GE appliances that we got with our house will be 15 years old next month and (knock on wood) have not yet needed service. Well, the dishwasher died and was replaced. I've been bracing myself for the past 5 years....I want appliances to last 15 or more years, but don't expect them to last longer than 10. 5 years?!? I'd be p!ssed!
