how to make second story bedroom safe for a 6 yo

We are in the process of finishing a room upstairs for DS who is newly 6. He will be the only one sleeping upstairs. What would you do to make it safe for him. Fire ladder, window guards? Regardless I'm going to insist on owning a tall ladder to reach upstairs and leaving where we can get it easily so if he doesn't wake up/freezes we can get him...
