I haven't read all of the responses on this but can tell you that we've tried the charts that list out the chores and they did not work for our kids -- whether I was WOH or WAH.

A few weeks ago I found a simple "chore ticket" on pinterest that has been working like a charm. It's a ticket with 7 punches on it. Each time a child does something to help -- usually something they suggest -- they get a punch. If they get all 7 punches by the end of the week they will get $5. I think the beauty of this approach is that most of the chores are developed by the kids. So far they have windexed the sliding doors, picked up their rooms, vacuumed the floors, dusted tables, watered plants, emptied trash cans, etc.

So, for us this works because it gets them to help us, but on their terms. Eventually we will add in specific chores but for now it's not broke!

Well, dh and I are pretty messy, so it is hard to make the girls do a lot. (things are changing, but slowly)

We used a chart (I printed from some site somewhere) for a while, but it faded quickly.

My girls (6.5) are expected to brush own teeth, get selves dressed, one brushes own hair, but the other doesn't. They are supposed to pick up toys, but it rarely happens

They are expected to clear their own plates. They usually help with setting and wiping the table, cleaning up their own spills, folding and putting away laundry, sometimes wiping the floor (they like to use the spray bottles, so I let them wipe the hardwoods ) Recently they have asked to wash dishes (our dishwasher is broken. They used to help empty it) but their washing of dishes leads to me re-doing it.

I like pp's punch ticket idea!

I didn't read the other posts, so forgive me if I'm being redundant.

I printed out a chore chart for my kids. I have a dry-erase chore chart from Target for about $8 each, but honestly the print out is better. I have a list taped next to their doors in their bedrooms.

AM Chores for my 6yo DS: make bed, brush teeth, brush hair, get dressed, put your dishes away, do your homework (in case of summer, I have workbooks)
PM Chores: brush teeth, put clothes in the hamper, get clothes ready for the next day, put toys away.
