A friend has offered me to buy her Ergo and infant insert. I did not use a carrier with DS. In looking at other threads it seems the Ergo would be what most recommend.
DS will be 4 when DC is born. He already does weekly swimming lessons and I am imagining another organized activity added within DC's first year of life. We meet up with friends weekly at the park also. The reason why I didn't use a carrier with DS, is because I am a very big person. I am 5'10 and am well endowed. I just didn't think it would be comfortable, but I am thinking I will need my hands free more now. Is there a better option for a larger person? Should I buy the Ergo to have and just resell if I don't like it?

I had an Ergo with the waist extender & it fit me well. I am large as well. I found it very comfortable. If I wasn't comfortable, I knew I had the straps adjusted wrong. My DS insisted on being held at the grocery store until he was 2 (and then some) - if it weren't for the Ergo, I don't know what I would have done. I didn't get it till he was 8 months old so I never used the infant insert.

I'm a larger lady (plus sized, 5'7" and well endowed) and I loved my Ergo with #2! I didn't even buy it until DD1 was 2.5yo and I bought it because I didn't want to take a stroller on a cruise. Loved it for her then. She was also 4 when DD2 was born. I found myself wearing my second child WAYYYY more than I ever carried around my first - I never even had a carrier for her!!
I will say I don't like the Ergo until about 4-5 months out though. I had the insert, and didn't like it - felt really bulky. I got a wrap instead during those first few months. Way better. Then once she could sit up more on her own, I put her in the Ergo and we were both happy. You can get waist belt extentions for the Ergo, which I had and used. I found I could walk around with the baby and not feel her at all in my back - and I have a bad back! The weight is distributed more evenly in your hips and it feels great. When I carried my 2.5yo around on our cruise, I carried her 80% of the time and my back never ever got tired! |

I have an Ergo with an extender strap. I've used it since DD was 4 months old (without the insert) and probably could have used it right away with the insert, but I just couldn't figure the darn thing out. Until she was big enough to go into the Ergo without the insert, I used a woven wrap (EllaRoo brand) to wear her because she very much preferred to be close to Mama than sitting in a "container."
Which insert? The "new" one is burrito-shaped and kind of bulky; I wasn't a fan, but it does work pretty nicely if you line your baby up properly. I'd get someone to show you how to position Baby in the insert and then how to position the insert in the carrier before you start using it. For comparison, I'm about 5'8", have 42" hips, a 38 bra band and at my largest an F/G cup, and I didn't find the Ergo to be uncomfortable in the body. HOWEVER, if you're bigger than that while nursing, I might want a different carrier, like the Boba 3G, which has straps that feel less bulky, or the Ergo Performance - just note that the strap extender is NOT compatible with the Performance or Sport models.

I use an Ergo and I am also a bigger person (5'9" and post-partum a size 20...sigh) and it works fine. I do not need the waist extender. I'm not crazy about it with the infant insert but I love it for an older baby. I wore DD1 until she was 1.5 yo. DD2 is still a little too small for it without the infant insert, but with the infant insert it is just oppressively hot, especially given the heat of this summer. For babies under 4/5 months, I really prefer my Moby wrap.

I had an Ergo with DD1, and we were never able to make it work. I loved it, DD hated being in it (we tried front/back/hip carry positions, even took her in to a baby wearing clinic to make sure I was positioning her right). If you can get the Ergo for a good price, then sure, might as well try it out and you can resell it for the same price if it doesn't work. I just wanted to add my $.02 that not everyone loves the Ergo. (FWIW, my DD loved being in the Baby Bjorn, which I know is not popular with this board.)

I am an "ergo owner"
I am not nearly as tall as you as I'm 5'4". I am "well endowed" however and plus size. A friend of mine who is 6'4"(!!!) told me to get the Ergo and I LOVE it. It is so comfortable. I ended up getting the Ergo Sport, which I heard was better for those who are larger and it also is made of lighter material. Apparently it would make me less hot than the standard Ergo, as I get hot very easily. I want to let you know that the PP poster was incorrect - we have the waist extender for my DH to use and it works fine with the Ergo Sport. |

Thanks for the advice. My friend is asking $70 for the Ergo and the insert. Should I buy it?

It's a good deal, but if you want a new one, keep an eye on BabySteals. They have them on sale every few months.
