I've read everyone's comments and reviews and am curious 1. Who is it that has rated it number 1 (I am assuming the Fields?). 2. Doesn't the foam become less soft more quickly than coils and thus pose a greater hazard? I would think that the foam would more easily be "smooshed" down from weight of baby, especially as he/she gets older. 3. Is the foam *really* firm? I am so worried about having a mattress firm enough and I was shocked in BRU yesterday how soft some of them were. 4. Does anyone have more information on the study suggesting SIDS when passing down mattress from child to child?
Thanks for any and all help- Debbie |

I can't help with all of your questions, but will try with some of them:
1. The Fields (in their last book - not sure about the latest release) and Consumer Reports. 2. High quality, dense foam should not smoosh down easily - cheapo stuff probably would. 3. Our Colgate foam mattress is definitely firm - I have no SIDS concerns with this mattress (vs. a coil) although we have only used it for 6 months. But Colin sleeps GREAT on it! 4. Sorry, no information. Have you checked with the SIDS Alliance?

And I have another question. The salesperson at the local retailer said that infants don't like such firm high-density mattresses, and that's why they don't sell so many of them. She just basically said that infants prefer something a tad softer. HMMMM.........

And who has polled infants to determine their preferences?? Sounds like another sales pitch to me. I'm not aware of any studies that show that babies sleep better on coil vs. foam - it's much more dependent on the individual baby than the mattress, IMO. That said, we did get the two-sided mattress so we can turn it over and make it slightly softer when Colin gets a little older.

We have the Colgate Classica as well. Before seeing it in person, I didn't know a foam mattress could be so firm -- but when you see it for yourself you will have no SIDS concerns. Plus babies weigh so little during the SIDS risk time (primarily the first 6 months I think), that they don't sink into it much at all.
As for comfort, I think Dorothy would probably prefer something a little softer, but it's hard to know for sure. We coslept with her for the first 4+ months, and I think she got used to our softer mattress and then had a hard time adjusting to the firm crib (in addition to being removed from Mom's all night diner!). But she seems fine with it now. We got the one-sided version, but I confess I have no recollection why we chose that over the 2-sided (I know there was a reason...) |
