Default Exploding Duralex

My 11-year-old son was unloading the dishwasher today when a Duralex glass exploded in his hand. It sounded like a gunshot! And glass was everywhere, including shards all over him. He said he didn't bump it on anything, and there was no significant change in temperature since the dishwasher would have been cooled off for hours. Has anyone else had this happen? I just did a quick Google search and found that when they are bumped they can shatter immediately or later. So maybe there was some earlier impact (likely in this house) that caused today's event. Anyway I just wanted to warn people since I know there's a lot of love for these glasses here. I mostly love them, too, but am considering switching to something else at the moment. That was scary!

Between this and my shattering Corelle, I am really sick of cleaning up break-resistant glass. We've had something shatter at least 2-3 times a week for the last month, I think! Maybe plastic's not so bad after all....

I've had it happen here... It was the scariest thing, thank god I had my glasses on.

(Same thing with Corelle...) It seems like anything you have in the kitchen, plastics, glass...whatever... it's dangerous. I think it's time to buy paper plates.

This hasn't happened to me (knock on wood), but there was a fairly recent thread about this same thing happening to other BBBers:

Interesting how one of the times brittone2 said she was unloading the dishwasher, too. Maybe the sanitizing heat cycle is just too hot for the glasses? It sure makes me nervous now, though!

For real? yikes! I like duralex precisely bc it doesn't break easily! Ours are really old, though, over 15 yrs, so I wonder if they're making them lower quality now, or if the formula has changed? Very scary. Glad your DS is OK - sounds like a recall waiting to happen.

Had a Pyrex dish break in the oven one time. (Bought when we got married,s o 13 years ago. And broke probably 8 years ago.) It's the only time it's ever happened for me.

Scary!
I do not use the heat cycle at all. It's too hard on dishes.
