Default random electricity/light bulb question

We just got a new outside light but didn't notice until we put it up that it "doesn't work for CFL bulbs". So what exactly happens if we put a CFL or LED in the switch? Is it a fire hazard? Can't believe we bought a new light that takes incandescent lights when they are about to stop selling them.

Does the light have a motion or light sensor? If so, these types of fixtures keep a slight current running through them in order to operate, which will cause a CFL bulb to flicker.

Yes, it has a motion sensor. That makes sense. Thanks!

That is not totally correct. There are lights with motion/light sensors that even though they don't recommend a CFL bulb, you can still use one and it won't flicker. I have some of these older type light fixtures and my CFL work fine. The best for motion detector spot lights, esp if you live in a climate where it's colder is to use LED bulbs.
