Anyone have any experience to opinions about this? I herd on the news if clothes are treated they kill ticks on contact. We live in new England and the tics are a huge problem here - they also said that babylegs was selling treated clothing. When I looked on their website I only saw leg Warner's. I have two boys so can't really use them. Any info would be helpful!!

I asked about this last month:
http://windsorpeak.com/vbulletin/sho...ght=permethrin Personally, I feel more comfortable buying the clothes that already have it in them. The spray that you use at home to treat your clothes doesn't last for as many washings and you you have to be really careful when you are applying it. Also, you are supposed to wash any treated clothes separate from your regular laundry so it is easier for me to isolate DDs' khaki zip-off cargos - which stick out considerably from their usual, grandma-bought Gymbo wardrobe. ![]() The girls can wear their treated pants for hikes but for around the yard, we'll just do tick checks.

I got the spray and the clothes which already have the permethrin on them. The spray only lasts six weeks or six washes. You also have to put in on according to the instructions, which isn't just a quick spray thing. One bottle will only really do 1 kid's outfit in my experience. The clothes are supposed to last up to 50-70 washes. There a few manufacturers that make them. But I think only Columbia has kids stuff. Here is the general site for the Columbia line:
http://www.columbia.com/Insect-Block...efault,pg.html Here is the top I got my DD for example: http://www.amazon.com/Columbia-Shiel...7346500&sr=8-4 And the pants I got for my DS:http://www.amazon.com/Columbia-Boys-...7346532&sr=8-8 I bought one set of clothing for each of our family members (shirt/pants) this spring after I found 9 ticks on my DD pants after one walk around the woods behind our property. I sprayed the socks/shoes. I purchased them from Amazon and Sierra Trading Company to get the best prices. So my take on the spray is it would work if you were just using it for a week of camping. But for us to take a walk once or twice a week in the woods it made more sense to invest in the clothing and just plan to wear those to go for walks. However, it really isn't a solution for the fact the kids can pick up ticks just hanging around are yard. We have used the clothing and I will say I see less ticks on the clothing when we come back from the walk, and the one or two I have seen look like they are drunk. It is a neurotoxin for the tick, so my guess is even if we hadn't found the tick it would have not made it to an attachment spot. Here's the place a got the information for the permethrin treatments. They also have videos on how to apply it correctly, both by soaking an spray. http://www.tickencounter.org/prevent...llent_clothing So I guess I would say it was worth it for me, but it doesn't completely reduce the risk and I still need to do daily tick checks. But at least I feel like I can take the kids for a walk in the woods with the dogs. Oh, and if you have dogs I recently switched from using Frontline Plus to Advantix for my dogs. The Frontline hasn't worked around here for years on ticks. Currently Advantix appears to work, but you can't use it if you have cats in the house. Oh, I live in Massachusetts if you are wondering about my location. |
