We purchased the Simmons Highland Park Crib in Natural Finish six weeks ago. My DH assembled it, at which time we noticed a strong odor from the finish. We also had the matching dresser but it did not smell. The crib has been in the nursery for 6 weeks now and the smell has decreased but not enough. Two days ago I tried wiping it down with a warm rag, it didn't make much difference.
I called Simmons Juvenile furniture and they said to try a vinegar/water solution followed by a mild soap solution. They said if the smell doesn't go away in three weeks to contact BRU for an exchange, which is something I really do not want to have to do. Just trying to get the room completed before our little one arrive in ~8 weeks. Has anyone had similar issues with new crib furniture, any recommendations on how to get the smell out? Thanks, Darshana |

I have a remedy for musty old wood smell. Don't know if it will work for finish, but it imight be worth a shot! Close the crib up in its room -- or a closet if you have one it will fit in. Put bowls of vinegar out in the room, with a slice of white bread in each bowl. Close it all up and let it sit for a week.
I read about this for removing musty smells from old dresser drawers, and it worked beautifully on some family heirlooms of DH's. For dressers, put the bowls in the drawers and close it all up. I hope you find a solution! |
