My DD will be in the 2 - 2.5 year age range next spring and summer, and, while I don't have extremely high expectations or a timetable in mind, I'm hoping she might show some interest in the potty by then. So, as I see clothes on sale and buy them for next summer, I'm guessing I should stay away from one-piece outfits, like rompers and bubbles. Is this right? Do you strictly go to shorts and bloomers and dresses when they reach the potty-able age? I'm guessing this means no more bodysuits that snap at the crotch, either. What have those of you with experience done?

Well, my 2yo DS is pottytraining and I still use onesies/rompers for him - though our days on those are numbered because while they fit him around, they are becoming too short. I would still use them, until the child is consistently putting on and taking off their clothes.

I found it was best to move away from clothes that snap at the crotch and one pieces that are hard to remove. For us one of the first things I taught DD when potty training was how to pull her pants up and down. She already knew how to strip herself, LOL.
To this end, when she was training she wore a lot of leggings since they have elastic waists and are easy to pull up/down to the knees. She would wear them at first under tops and then as she got more practice under dresses. Leggings are still a staple of her wardrobe and she's been trained for 8 months + ! If you want to buy pants (like jeans) make sure they have elastic ALL the way around, not just in the back. |

I'm so glad you mentioned this, b/c I am buying ahead for DD who is only 1 mo old currently, so we are a LONG way away from thinking of potty training. But since it is so far away, I wasn't thinking about that in my buy ahead purchases!!!
My DS however is now 2.5 years old and I am no longer buying onesie type outfits or one piece pajamas for him. I was given this tip from my SIL as she has twin boys and has just gone through potty training with the both of them. HTH |

Dresses are good for girls, after that skip zippers, buttons and anything time consuming to come off for little ones...'cause when they gotta go, they gotta go LOL ;) you don't wanna be fussing with an outfit at that momment in time!

I would stick with elastic waist shorts and dresses. They make it the easiest for them to get to the potty fast!
(If your DD is skinny like mine, she can pull down her zipper/button shorts without undoing them first, but my boys were too chunky to do that) |

I would go ahead and buy a few outfits that are romper/bubble style. Even though they are a pain for potty training, you most likely won't be doing serious potty training at 2 years old so you'll get some wear out of them. And it will be the last time you get to use them, so go ahead and enjoy it! :) I didn't buy anything one-piece for Wesley for the summer right after he turned two and then he didn't potty train for real until he was 3 1/2!! I missed two summers that he could have been wearing those adorable one-pieces! Darn!

I didn't plan ahead for when Adrienne potty trained. For one thing, I had bunches of dresses for the summer when she was 2.5 and she decided to go potty before that. AND her whole wardrobe was overalls! So.... she still wore bubble and one piece outfits. Snap crotch outfits really didn't get in her way, she just leaned over, grabbed hold and RIPPED them open! LOL Then of course I"d have to resnap her after she went.... :D

Aw, shucks, I'm glad you asked this question.......I didn't even think about the whole zippers, snaps, etc. thing, and I have an entire size 3T Gymboree Whale Watching and Indian Summer wardrobe waiting for Shelby for fall and winter, when she'll be 2+ and we may be embarking on potty fun - unfortunately, her ensembles include a number of pairs of pants that aren't exactly easy to take off........shucks. Cute clothes, though. We'll have to work with it I guess!

I too had a few non-potty friendly outfits right before training DD. Knowing they would be in limited use DD wore them a LOT (including one pair of super cute purple LE overalls and some great Gymboree onesies) and then when the actual SERIOUS training started (ie:expectation of her using the potty with no warning at any time) I took them out of circulation. She actually did get a good bit of use out of them for about 2.5 months in Fall before the winter training set in.
Your other option of course is that by late summer the EBay prices on the Whale Watching stuff might be pretty high. It was a very popular line last year. |
