Is there really a difference? They are both made for sensitive skin. Is it just the scent? I'm simply not convinced that I need to spend $20 for a gallon of Dreft.

We used (and still do) All Free and Clear, and never had any problems. As a matter of fact, DD had mild eczema and our ped. recommended it since it doesn't have the fragrance added like baby detergents do. Personally I think the baby detergents are a marketing joke. If you don't feel the need to have a pink box that has a baby fragrance added, then save the money!

ITA. We've never used baby detergent and my ds is just fine. We use Soapworks (we get it at Trader Joe's) and All Free and Clear.

Also want to add that Consumer Reports recently rated All Free and Clear as a "Best Buy" in laundry detergent. The best part (for me)? Sam's Club carries it! :) Cheers, Lin Mom to 2 wild boys D 3/98 G 11/02 http://instagiber.net/smiliesdotcom/...n/pnoodles.gif |

We use Tide Free for all our laundry and have never had a problem. I didn't see the need to waste money on Dreft either.

Hated the smell of dreft! We just use All Free & Clear. No dyes, no perfumes and works great! All our baby stuff gets washed with our stuff and has since day one!

The reason to buy Dreft or Ivory Snow is because they are soap not detergent and therefore won't remove the chemical fire retardant that is applied to some children's pajamas. )This fire retardant is not as common as it used to be.) But if you are buying loose pajamas or nightgowns that are made of flammable material, then you don't want to wash them in regular laundry detergent or they won't be fire retardant anymore.

Lisa,
I didn't know that about the fragrance aggravating eczema...thanks for the head's up! My little guy has a mild dose & it's cleared up thanks to the cream & the twice daily "greasing of the creases":-) but I've also been using Dreft. It's foolish for me to be treating a rash & continue using a detergent that may well be irritating his skin. I started with All Free & Clear but took up with Dreft because I scored a big vat of it incredibly reasonably at BJs. Looks like it's back to All for me. FWIW All also makes a baby care detergent. Costs the same as other types of All but comes in a smaller (80 oz vs 100 oz) container. For those of you that crave the Dreft-like fragrance without the Dreft price. Nina |

I have read that liquid softener also takes out the fire retardant in loose fitting pajamas.

We know the "greasing the creases" all too well ;-) Funny story, my parents are big on fragrant detergent and softener and I didn't make this connection until DD was 4 months old, but she always got very red in the face when they were over. I thought maybe it was from them holding her, that she was just warm. One day it dawned on me that she often has her face nuzzled into their shirt. So the next time I had them put a blanket over their shoulder and sure enough she was fine.
We've had good luck with All F&C! Lisa |
