Do you need a swim diaper? I would imagine I don't need to worry about him peeing in the pool (I mean and other kids--heck, he pees in the bath!). But I would think a regular diaper would get all funky. No diaper?
It would just be a little wading pool, but I was thinking if I put DS in a swim diaper every time that could a) get expensive! and b) be not so worth it if he gets out after 5 minutes. Just curious. I know it's kind of a silly question though. I just don't know the answer! Debbie Mom to Sawyer!

Target sells reusable swim diapers for like $5 (basically a simple cloth dipe). You just wash and reuse. I saw them on an endcap recently. We just picked one up to use when we go to the indoor pool near our house...before this I've used mostly disposable swim dipes even though we CD at home. There are more elaborate cloth swim dipes available online more in the 10-15 dollar range.
Honestly, DS often just goes naked when he's by himself. From what I understand, swim dipes (even the disposable ones) don't do much to block pee...they are more just about containing poop. So...even using a swim dipe in your DC's own pool doesn't seem like it is going to prevent much other than poop. DS pretty much likes to be in there nakie ;)

When we have the pool/sprinkler in the front yard, he wears one of the swim dipes from Target that Beth mentioned. They are like tiny speedos, and lined in terrycloth, so seem comfy. This is to protect him from perverts.
If the pool is on our back deck, which is quite private, he is naked. When he's at the community pool, he wears swim trunks over the speedo for fashion reasons, lol. I think trunks with no dipe would also work, for modesty's sake.

Swim diapers don't hold in pee, just poop. If they absorbed pee, they'd absorb the pool water too.
They are just for containing poop, which I'd want done in my own pool too I think. :) Holli |

Ah, yes of course, makes sense they would hold poop, not pee. Not thinking there--having the diaper absorb all the water in the pool would not be a good thing, huh?
Yes, I've had some floating poop in the bath that I could do without in the pool! :) I will look for those reusable swim dipes. Sounds like a great idea. And we'll mostly be in the backyard, so either that or naked sounds good to me! Debbie Mom to Sawyer!

We use the reusable swim diapers here, along with a tshirt. I'm super worried about sun exposure for my kids. My 4 year old has a short-sleeved wetsuit instead of a cute little bikini, because she's willing to wear it and it provides more sun protection. My 18 month old will probably just do the swim diaper/tshirt combination this summer. Not quite as cute as all those pretty little girl bathing suits out there, but better sun protection than sunscreen alone.
Oh, and you definitely don't want to have to deal with the floating poop issue! ;) |

We use a Bumpy's swim diaper and Kaya wears it most of the time, mostly to contain her poop. We do have a swim shirt, which she will wear or not as the mood hits her. Our pool is in the screened-in porch, so I don't have to worry about sun exposure so much.

You can re-use regular disposable swim diaper for a few times. Just put it on a line after use.

Before my youngest was potty trained I did use swim diapers in the kiddie pool. If she pooped I didn't want to have to clean it out of there! If she got out after only 5 minutes or didn't poop I would hang the swim dipe to dry and would reuse it. You can get at least 2 uses out of them if you take it off gently.

Just to add to what others have said - a regular diaper will get really, really heavy (disposable) in water. Ask me, I once washed a clean Pampers disposable that DD tossed in the hamper. :) I definitely think it would hamper DC's movement and be more than a little uncomfortable.
