Default Car Seat confusion!!

Does anyone have an opinion on the difference between a Convertible car seat (like FP Safe Embrace) and a Toddler/Booster seat (like FP Grow With Me)? If the Toddler/Booster fits up to 80 lbs., why get the smaller version and have to switch later? Does a car seat actually last from 20 lbs. to 80 lbs. with regular usage? Which is better?

Thanks - any info in a hurry is appreciated!

Default RE: Car Seat confusion!!

There is a chunk of overlap between these two types of seats. Both handle children from 1 year to 40 pounds or a little less with an internal 5 point harness.

A convertible also can be used rear facing, many up to 30 or 35 pounds (which may be 2 or 3 years old). Rear facing is safer as long as possible.

The convertible can be used forward facing from 1 year (or later) to 40 pounds or when your child's shoulders reach the top slots. Many children outgrow these by height first.

So if you need rear facing use, you need a convertible.

Combo seats CAN be used for 1 year olds, but have less side sleeping support than most convertibles. They use the internal harness to 40 pounds. There are a number that have higher harness slots than most convertibles, so most children DO reach a full 40 pounds. The FP Grow With Me and Evenflo Express have the higher harness slots and front adjuster. They are also a bit more padded, and have slightly larger side wings than some of the other combo seats.

Then combo seats have the harness remove and are used as a belt positioning booster to 80 pounds.

So it depends on your child.

And of course, what fits in your car, and what you can use correctly every time.

If you post more info, we might be able to give you more help.
