Both my son and daughter are in the Cherished Cargo Boosters with harnesses. They are similar in height and weight, but my problem is with the height. Both are now at 40 lbs, but neither's shoulders reach above the top slots as the manual says they should in order to go to belt positioning. Is it safe to keep them in the harness once they are over 40 lbs? It's going to be a while before my daughter in particular reaches those top slots. Thanks.

The limits on the harnessed seats are the "or" variety, meaning whichever comes first. Most kids do tend to reach the height limit first, with their shoulders above the top slots. But a few reach the weight limits first. My kids reached them at the same time!
So now that both kids are at 40 pounds, it is time to take the harness off. The seat should protect them well in bpb mode too. Parents have occasionally decided to keep their children in the harness past 40 pounds, but it is only in some pretty particular situations, like if the child is less than 3 years old. And it would only be for one of the seats that is certified in Canada to 47 pounds with the tether, and only if you really were using the tether. So in this case, it is pretty clear. It is time to take off the harness, for both children. |

So does this mean that if they are "just" 40 lbs, they should still go to a shoulder belt, since being in the harness is not safe anymore? I just feel nervous putting them in belts (they are 3-1/2 and 5 yrs old, by the way). Is this booster a good bpb?

You can reasonably wait until they are a full 41 pounds, if you want. But I wouldn't wait much further.
Yes, this is a fine booster. The only down side is the shoulder belt adjuster. It is the kind that can allow the child to pull it out and make it loose, without it automatically retracting. So you'll want to keep an eye on it every so often. If your children don't need the shoulder belt adjuster to be comfortable, you can skip it. One nice thing about this seat as a booster is that it still gives some side sleeping support. |
