Just wondering if carbags (warm cover that goes inside your catseat or infant seat so you don't need a snowsuit) void the warrenty on carseats? I cannot find a clear answer on this. I was told that they do in prenatal class, but then other places recommend them. So I am at a loss. Please help.

Yes, they do. UNLESS they are specifically made BY the carseat manufacturer.
But worse than just voiding the warranty, they could actually be dangerous and reduce the safety of your carseat in a crash (because they can prevent you from getting the harness tight enough, and your baby could launch right out of the seat, theoretically). The safest way to dress a baby is in several thin layers (like a onesie, then a playsuit, then a polarfleece (thin, noncompressible) bunting (only on REALLY cold days...don't forget, babies get hot in heated cars, too, and an overheated baby is not good)...and then just put a blanket over the harness once it's snug, or get a carseat cover that's like a shower cap, fleece with elastic around the edges so it doesn't fall off...those keep baby warm without interfering with the proper tightening of the harness. Hope that helps a little! Julie CPS Tech and mom to 2 in seats http://www.cpsafety.com/articles/RFAlbum/SarahMA.aspx |

Julie,
Thank you for answering my question in a timely fashion. I just got off the phone with Graco and one person said "No put nothing in or around the carseat that doesn't come with the carseat" and then I spoke to another Graco employee and they said "Yes, car bags would be better than placing blankets over top of the straps because in the event of a crash you want to easily be able to access the baby without things covering the baby up and inhibiting access." So they really have me confused!! The response you gave is what my prenatal class has said. So, as long as the carbag goes OVER the straps and NOT under them, I should be safe? Neither Graco employee knew what I was talking about when I said "does this interfere with the warranty?" What are your thoughts on these two models? http://www.kiddopotamus.com/prod_fw_flat.html or http://www.kiddopotamus.com/prod_gc_inft_open.html Thanks again for your input!! Kat |

Jeeez...like it would take more than a nanosecond to lift a blanket off an infant seat after a crash? (Sorry, I have heard so many crazy things out of the Customer Service Reps I just have to laugh at their odd ideas ;) )
I'd go with this one, or this style http://www.kiddopotamus.com/prod_fw_flat.html, as it's only OVER the seat, and not down in the seat under the baby and possibly making the straps looser. This one's good, too http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg...67920?v=glance and generally there's a "goldbug" model at walmart for about $12 that's fine, too. :) Julie CPS Tech and mom to 2 in seats http://www.cpsafety.com/articles/RFAlbum/SarahMA.aspx |

You know, I have that Great Baby Cover Up from Kiddopottamus, and I cannot figure out how to safely fit it over my SnugRide to save my life. Seriously - IT IS HUGE. It is so huge that I can't even imagine using it over the Baby Bjorn. Giant, that thing is. I am ~thisclose~ to returning it and getting one of those Bundle Me things, because they've been crash tested with the infant seats.
I KNOW, it's not made by Graco - but unless someone can tell me how not to make the Baby Cover Up ssag and bag and not provide any warmth at all, I'm kind of at a loss. |
