Default Carseat placement

I am sure this has been covered before in different configurations, but I thought I'd ask anyway. I know that Rachel (knaidel) posted about places in Chicagoland that will install carseats for you, but I honestly would rather be told where to put it for maximum safety than have someone do it *for* me.

We have a 2004 VW Passat Wagon w/ LATCH, and 2 Britax RA w/ LATCH. My son is FF in his RA and #2 will of course be RF until she's around 18 mos or so (I know it's safer for her to be RF longer than that, but my husband is also 6'7" w/ long legs and he needs to sit somewhere too!). We were thinking of putting my son FF behind the driver and #2 RF behind the passenger seat, simply because the RF will require more room than a FF seat (and there's that tall husband thing again). Is there any reason not to use this config of carseats?

That sounds like it would work just fine. If you DO go to a tech, the only thing they do is teach you how to do it, anyway (maybe give you a trick or two you might not know...)...but I never went to a tech once before I went to the class, and I know my seats were fine and knew all there was to know about seatbelts and stuff, anyway, so you're probably great by yourself.

Thanks. I will probably have my installs checked my a tech because I don't like to screw around w/ this kind of stuff. My MIL thinks I'm nuts because I wouldn't let her drive my son around until she brought her car w/ my carseat in it to a tech check-up (we met Darren at that one) and since I recommended that she get the Cosco Regal Ride based on your recs for it, I will probably make her go back to the tech check-up to have it checked as well. I don't know her car as well and since it's older (a 1998 Ford Explorer) and w/o LATCH, I am more concerned w/ her car than w/ mine.
