What is the best brand of shower cap type cover to fit a SafeSeat? I have the lands end one that I picked up at a consignment sale. However, because the SafeSeat is a bit bigger and DD's feet hang over the edge, the cover doesn't fit terrifically. Is there a fleece shower cap type cover to fit the SafeSeat made yet?
Thanks, Heather DS 11/27/2004 DD 6/9/2007 |

The rule of thumb as I understand it to be is NEVER USE ANY AFTER MARKET PRODUCTS ON A CAR SEAT... they can effect the safety of how the car seat will respond in a crash. Only use the products that come with your car seat because the seat has been crash tested with them.
A Note on Car Seat Covers Many companies also offer thick car seat covers that act like a bunting for babies in the winter. Parents should avoid buying any car seat cover or infant bunting that threads through the harness straps of their child's car seat. Often the packaging of these covers states that the product meets all federal car seat safety guidelines. However, there are no federal guidelines governing after-market car seat accessories. These extra car seat covers and buntings could interfere with the function of the car seat harness, and many car seat manufacturers will void your car seat warranty if after-market accessories are used. Article quote above came from: http://babyproducts.about.com/od/car...arseatcoat.htm GREAT ARTICLE ABOUT USING AFTER MARKET PRODUCTS WITH YOUR CAR SEAT: http://cpsafety.com/articles/AftMarketMan.aspx QUOTE FROM ABOVE ARTICLE: Britax's statement: "The use of non-Britax Child Safety, Inc covers, inserts, toys, accessories, or tightening devices is not approved by Britax. Their use could cause this restraint to fail Federal Safety Standards or perform worse in a crash. Their use automatically voids the Britax warranty." (This statement can be found under the Warranty section of all Britax Child Restraint manuals) HERE IS ANOTHER ARTICLE and QUOTE: the Texas Department of Public Safety recommends that you 'keep your child in the clothes they will be wearing when they are indoors. Place the child in the infant seat or car seat, making sure the harness straps are snug over the shoulders and that they lie straight and flat down to the buckle. Buckle the child in and THEN put the coat or blanket OVER them - on TOP of the harness system. You can even turn the coat around and put his arms through the sleeves after he is buckled into his car seat. This will ensure your kids are kept snug in their seat, the harness system is able to do its job in the event of a crash, and that the kids stay warm.' The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration also recommends that 'to keep your baby the safest, always remove bulky clothing or blankets before you place the child in the seat. Then, put the blanket or coat over the baby. You should never place anything thick underneath the baby, unless that item came with the car seat originally — which tells you it's been tested by the manufacturer. I have the EB one that I got at Marshall's. However, DS3's feet are not quite at the edge, so I haven't had that problem yet. He does kick it and so far it stays on, but it is just barely big enough so if he were over the edge I'm sure it wouldn't work.
Let me google on it for a bit, because I'm going to need one before the winter is over. :-)

While I understand and fully agree with what you are saying. I need/use this item when DD is in the carseat going to and from the car to take
DS to preschool, go into a store etc... when it is cold - to keep DD somewhat protected from the elements. I never use it in the car - here I use a blanket and heat. Also, what I am referring to goes over the carseat only and not under the harness. Frankly, I don't see how the item I am referring to is any different than putting a coat on backwards over a harness. Heather |

This one says it fits the SS:
http://www.babypolargear.com/infant_car_seat_cover.htm Not sure if it will help much with the legs hanging over, though. I would ask them if they have pictures of it on a SS1 before buying. There is also the TeddyToes Blanket, it would be in place of a coat. It goes behind them, but is thin fleece that wraps over the harness - more of a parental decision: http://www.mommygear.com/teddytoes.htm Little Red Riding Capes - easy to pop on/off, but no elastic (yikes! $70+ - look for carseat cape/poncho, same thing): http://www.babyhoodandbeyond.com/car...cover_cape.htm Do you sew at all or know someone that does? This pattern: http://www.kwiksew.com/Catalog/PDF/2997.pdf Could probably be modified - add some extra length to accomodate legs hanging over or even go crazy and put 'legs' in.

Thanks for remembering the Teddytoes...I really liked using mine last year. It was really NOT a problem with the harness at all :)

LOL- I really like the safety announcement from the Texas DPS- we live in Minnesota and today it was eight degrees!!! You can't have a child go out to the car in just his regular clothes when it's that cold (which is pretty darn often up here). In that case, I'm not sure which is more dangerous (or likely)- a car crash or frost bite!
I just bought the Eddie Bauer Carrier covers from Target for our twins' infant carriers. They aren't bad- they fit well over our SafeSeats and they don't pull off when you raise or lower the handle. They are reversible with fleece on one side, nylon on the other. There is a face hole with a flap that can come down and a pouch to tuck the face flap up out of the way. I couldn't find it on Target.com, but it's at the store and so far we like it. HTH Lisa Mom to Gator July 2003 And Cha-Cha July 2005 and SiSi and Greenbean 2007 |

Sorry I had paraphrased.. that quote from the Texas DPS... Here is the entire quote.. it was in an article that was talking about how it ISN'T SAFE to put your child in their carseat with a heavy coat on:
Instead of putting your child in a car seat with a heavy winter coat, the Texas Department of Public Safety recommends that you 'keep your child in the clothes they will be wearing when they are indoors. When a child is wearing a thick coat, it's hard to tell if you have a good harness fit, which is crucial. A coat can add a lot of slack, reducing the level of protection for your child in a crash.' It's ok, though, her title specifically asked about a 'shower cap type cover', which is the kind that only goes over the top of the seat/child/harness...like a blanket with elastic around the edges to hold it on. It's perfectly safe to use one, but the Safeseat 1 is larger, and most of these covers are designed for slightly smaller seats.
