Have any of you added this kit to your Burley?
I think I finally have a solution to our need for a double stroller. I would love to buy my tenant and her twins a new double mountain buggy with the swivel wheel, but that is just way too expensive. But we've been using our Burley this spring, and putting my son Adam (4, 45 pounds) and his friend Nathan (5.5, 55/60 pounds) in it together. They like it! Even with the two of them squished in there together, they seem happy. So I thought that adding the stroller kit to our Burley would be the cheapest way to add a double stroller to our neighborhood that would hold both the 18 month old twins, Adam and Nathan, Nathan and his 1 year old brother, and Adam and our 3 year old day care child. Not all at once, of course! The pre-2001 kit costs $89 at my local bike shop and on-line. Since I only spent $85 for our Burley (used), this is a lot. Have any of you done this? How well does it work as a stroller? Can you still easily fold the Burley, even with the handle on it? My partner is afraid that I'm wasting money on something that we will hardly use. I told her that if I found this kit at a garage sale for $50 and bought it, she'd think I got a great deal. I've looked - the kit is never found used becuase it is always bought and put right on a burley! Thanks for any advice. |

I don't know the Burley by personal experience, but my experience of other trailers which convert to strollers is that the main issue is stride room. Even if you're not jogging or anything like that, a tall person, or one with a long stride, may find themselves kicking the back of the trailer, and that can get annoying. However, the only way to check for this problem is to go ahead and try it out! Good luck!
(And suggest to your partner that you can always re-sell the stroller kit, or the whole shebang, when you're done, and make back some $$. If they're that hard to find used, you should have no problem!) Best, KathyO |

Thanks, Kathy.
I went and did it. I bought the kit and installed it. And so far, I love it. Those big 20" tires are great, and the little swivel wheel on the front steer great. I took a spin around the block with three kids, all 4-6 years old, and for a short distance, even that worked! I think I'm going to be very happy with this solution, and with all the kids in my neighborhood, I'm sure this is going to get plenty of use! |
