Default Hiking stroller?

Hello-

I live near an extensive system of rugged trails in Boulder, CO. I don't run on them, but I routinely hike and want to be able to take my baby (due in February) with me when the time is right. I've reviewed previous posts on the topic, but most seem outdated. Can anyone give me advice on the best stroller to suit my needs? I generally won't need to fold it up to put it in the car (but when I do, DH has a big hnking SUV with plenty of space). My main interest is in finding something that will give DS a smooth ride on rough and sometimes rocky terrain (so I'd like shock absorbers) and will protect him from the sun. The BOB SUS Deluxe looks like an option that would meet my needs. Thoughts on that model? Others? Thanks in advance!

Mountain Buggy Urban Single or Phil & Ted's E3...or BOB :) If the threads seem old, that's because those are still the best ones, lol.

I LOVE my Mountain Buggy, it's so incredibly smooth and easy to push on any terrain, and dd is very comfortable in it.

We have a BOB, and it handles GREAT on the trails. It could easily do the Mesa Trail at Chautauqua; Marshall Mesa; all the flatter trails in east Boulder county. I have a 2004 model though, and there isn't a recline. I wouldn't take a baby under 6 months on the rougher trails in it because of the head control issue. And at that point, you could also throw the baby in a back pack and do some of the steeper hikes at Chautauq. or Sanitas. Good luck!!

We go hiking in the Rockies with our Kelty Joyrider 20". I look for cross-country ski trails - if it can be x-country skied, it will work with our stroller, LOL! I think any fixed wheel stroller will work as long as the wheels are big enough. They will be your best shock absorbers!

What do you mean by "rugged" trails? Single-track??? If so, you want at least 16" tires. I have an MBUS (12" wheels all around), a BOB Revolution (12" in front, 16" in back) and a Chariot Cavalier, fixed wheel jogger (16" all around). The Chariot is BY FAR the best on single-track, what I would call rugged, trails. The BOB works OK in a pinch, but if I know that's the terrain we'll be on, I'll take the Chariot. The MBUS sucks majorly on trails. It gets stuck on even minor roots.

I would take a fixed wheel jogger over shocks, but you get both with the BOB SUS, so that would be my recommendation. We really like the quality of BOB strollers. THey don't make the Chariot Cavalier anymore either.

BOBs have really great canopy coverage too.

Good luck!

Melissa
