I'm so happy for you. Hooray. Sometimes it just takes them a little while to get with the program :).

YAAAAYYYYY!!! I know about the guilt for the long cry, but don't let that dull your excitement. More {{hugs}} for you!

DARN DARN DARN! he cried again last night. i went up and rocked him a little more, which may have been counterproductive. but i was about to have a dinner party and i just couldn't deal. i don't know what to do if he keeps crying! i can't let him cry EVERY night. maybe for 2 minutes, but not for 15. i really really hope he was just overtired last night because he didn't get a good third nap. which was my fault, so hopefully i can get good naps today and no crying tonight. sigh... i got so excited...

I don't think that your ds will cry 15 minutes every night and you rocking him to sleep once for the sake of your dinner party will prob not create a habit.

I starting letting my my 4 mo. old learn to fall asleep on his own a few weeks ago (something I thought I would never do, as I leaned more to the AP philosophy early on). But, the putting to sleep procedure at night was taking 2 hrs and causing anxiety between DH and myself. I used the Ferber method. Since night three, he regularly fell asleep immediately. Occassionally, he has cried for 5 - 10 minutes. But, overall, he is sleeping hours longer per day than he used to(about 10-12 hrs/night). Also, learning to sleep on his own at night has helped his day sleeping. About 2 weeks ago, he starting napping in his crib for the first time in weeks. He has since taken at least 2 naps per day. I can't say that his day sleeping is perfect. His naps are between 30-45 minutes. I know he can sleep longer since he sleeps 6-8 hour stretches at night. But, at least he is sleeping in the day and the little catnaps take the edge off his grumpiness!

thanks so much, lisa. i think he may have just been overtired. but i was so discouraged. knowing that you have routine success with an occasional bout of crying REALLY helps. i will work hard to get him down tonight before he is overtired and see what happens.

ds has started to fall asleep for naps alone, too. it has been going really well. i thought we had a set back earlier today, he was crying a little when he usually just "complains" for a minute or two and then goes right to sleep. so i went in to see what the fuss was about. he didn't have his lovey or his lovey monkey in his hands. the moment i gave him the lovey, he snuggled his face into it and went right to sleep. i knew he was attached, but i didn't realize how much! it was SO sweet. he always goes to sleep for naps with the lovey or the monkey as a pillow now. (i go in there after a few minutes and remove it so that he doesn't bury his nose/mouth into it while he sleeps.)

ROFL!! it sounds SO funny to read "buy three more monkeys!"

we call him monkey, so i couldn't resist this little guy who is made of the EXACT same material as his lovey. you are right! i think i will go buy another lovey and another monkey or two!
