Default OT- Wedding attire for an evening wedding?

I know this is off topic, but I have to go to a wedding for DH friend (on my birthday x( ,but that's another board). It's at 7 pm with a reception to follow. We are in the very hot humid south, and I don't know what I should wear. Any help for me ladies?

TIA

Evening weddings are usually formal. A cocktail dress is acceptable unless the invite says black tie. If it does, you could still get away with a more upscale cocktail dress, or go long.

Your best bet is to talk to the bride so that you "fit in".

Although proper etiquette follows that evening weddings ARE formal, the bride may have something else entirely in mind. It would also be helpful in terms of what your DH should wear. Formal for men is a dark suit or a tux.

Then again, even though I had a formal evening wedding in NYC, people still showed up in questionable attire. One of DH's friends didn't even wear a tie! x(

Have fun!

according to official ettiquette, 7pm means it is automatically black tie. if dh has a tux, he should wear it. if he doesn't, he should wear his dressiest suit/tie. you should wear your dressiest cocktail dress. i don't think black tie necessarily means that you have to wear something to the floor these days. so i think you can wear your best cocktail dress with your best jewelery.

i had a 7pm wedding and called it black tie optional because i didn't want anyone to rent a tux for it. (silly to spend the money on that!) women wore long, short, sleeveless, strapless, black, colors... and they all looked great! i think a sundress would have stood out, but most women had on black cocktail dresses, heels and nice jewelery. (and my wedding was in VA in june)

as long as YOU are comfortable with what you are wearing, i am sure you will be fine!!
