i'm seeing big cracks in between the boards in a bunch of spots. what's going on? is it because we have the heat on? do we not have enough moisture in this house? any thoughts/suggestions? can it be repaired? the house was built in 2000, so it's not an age problem.

It happens in the winter months, if you are talking about the space between planks...and actually returns to the way it was in the warmer weather. We have some big gaps in certain areas and I assume there was more moisture in those spots.
We didn't have a vapor barrier in our crawl space under the house...check too and make certain you have one, that will be a piece of plastic or a barrier if you crawl space under the house is dirt!!!! I am certain you have one, we think ours was an over sight on the builders part...but check!!!! Our bulider told us the more moisture we can generate inside, the better for the floors. Do you have a humidifier on your furnace? We just installed one after hearing too many wood floor and cabinet horror stories. Another helpful thing I do is open the dishwasher after the cycle is through, and let all the water vapors out. HTH!
