Default Sound Levels when watching movies @ home

I just have a general question regarding sound levels when you're watching movies at home!

I've never "needed" to have the volume super loud...but DH feels otherwise...we have a pretty decent home theater setup in our living room ~ he loves watching movies (and we're not talking comedy or romance...we're talking Titanic, Pearl Harbor, anything w/ bombs, shooting, etc) at levels I feel are way too loud (45+ on the receiver w/ the subwoofer cranked).

It's usually after DS is asleep...or going to sleep...and his room is right above the TV and speakers. I worry about DS falling asleep to these sounds.

So....i guess my question is this....what do others do? Yes, we want to enjoy our movies at home, but within reason!

TIA!

Default RE: Sound Levels when watching movies @ home

Laura,

We also have this discussion at our house. We have a one story with the nursery and the living room sharing a wall. The t.v. and speakers are next to the shared wall and DH loves to crank the volume. (In our house this happens during sporting events, movies, etc.) If DH is not actually in front of the t.v., I just turn the volume down. He rarely notices. If he is there, I ask him to turn it down and if he does not want to, then he is assigned the task of dealing with any baby needs that develope. After one night of trying to comfort a fussy 5 month old (who had been sleeping), he usually will turn the volume down.

If that does not work for you guys, you might want to try insulating the nursery with a super thick pad and carpet.

Also a discussion between DH and the pediatrician might be helpful. My DH played in a band for many years (along with the requisite walkman with volume cranked air band teenage years) and is beginning to notice the effects on his hearing in middle age. He is more sensative to what we expose DD to.
Good Luck!
Lisa
