My husband and I were doing a little Christmas browsing on base at the BX (the base "department store"-they have a little of everything). Towards the back where they usually keep their garden/outdoor stuff is now where they have the Christmas things.
In the same area and on the same shelves where days ago were all kinds of pesticides, fertilizers, etc... there are now children's toys. The whole area still reeks of chemicals. I told Dave that I didn't want to buy anything for the baby there. It just makes me uncomfortable. He thinks it would be fine but will defer to me (he's used to dealing with this worry wart) on this. So, what do you think? What would you do? Thanks! Amanda & Jacob :) |

I wouldn't. I have seen too many boxes of "powdery" pesticides/fertilizers that leak. I wouldn't want to risk that residue being on or around toys that my DD would put in her mouth at a young age (she's two now, but I still wouldn't). In a small child the toxins from such products can be in very high concentration because their bodies are much smaller, to adults it's not as big a deal.
Just my opinion. Lisa |

Yeah, I'm with Lisa. And I suspect DH would think the same thing. UNLESS, the toys were totally washable and in sealed containers to begin with, which most aren't. So I would get your Chirstmas toys elsewhere.

I wouldn't. And speaking as an attorney who used to advise federal agencies, if I knew a client of mine created this situation, I'd be telling them to fix it because I think that it is an accident waiting to happen--some kid having to go to the ER on Christmas morning because they opened a package with chemical residue and then ran off to eat breakfast without washing off the residue.

At my BX they have the toys in the same place. If the price is cheaper there ask someone to get the toy you want from the backstock. I do this all the time. But make sure you ask where they keep the backstock of the garden stuff, mine keeps that in a completely different backstock area. Maybe one day the BX will wake up to the fact that its dangerous to do that.

I don't think I'd feel comfortable with it either. Maybe you should write a letter to the commander-in-charge of the BX. They should think about these things!

I'd buy elsewhere also.

I agree with you. And watch-out, because the Walmarts here do the same thing!

I wouldn't buy toys from there either. But I like the PP about asking to get one from the back... That is so crazy that they are being so careless. x(
