DS has been getting lots of bug bites lately, so I was just surfing the Avon site checking out the Skin So Soft line. I've never tried any of it, but I understand it is supposed to help keep the bugs at bay. As I was doing this, a colleague with kids called me, so I asked her what she uses. She mentioned a product I haven't heard of, Cactus Juice, and said that it is available at one of our local health food stores. Before I run over there to pick up some, I thought I'd check in here. Anyone heard of this or used it with success?
Here's the web site: http://www.cactusjuicetm.com/ TIA! Jerilyn DS, Sean 10/03 "Baby makes days shorter, nights longer, home happier, and love stronger." |

Hi Jerilyn
I'm not sure if I tried that one but I have tried the Avon one and some of the 'healthy non-chemical' ones from Whole Foods but sadly the only thing that really works with mosquitoes this bad seems to be Off. I really hate spraying it on DD though, but lately I've been letting them use it at daycare for the playground and then making sure I wash her well in the evening. Let me know if you actually find a non-DEET product that can keep C'ville mosqitoes at bay. Lucy DD 3/03 |

Hi, Lucy! If I make it to Rebecca's in the next few days, I'll pick up some Cactus Juice and let you know what I think.

Lavender oil works well. And a drop to a large spray bottle, shake well, and spray on skin. Depending on their age, you can use lemongrass oil on their clothes, too, but dilute well and don't spary on skin.

That's good to know. I think I actually have some lavender oil purchased for some project a while ago. I wonder if I can find it and how long it keeps.

Oooh! I have lavender oil! I'll have to try it. FWIW, the skin so soft bath oil helped when I was in Taiwan 10 years ago (mosquito central), but I did still get bites.

We used this a few years ago in Honduras on a Scuba trip. It worked great for keeping the "noseeums" away. (tiny little bugs you can hardly see, usually just see the welts they leave behind) It worked wonderfully. But once we got out of the water, we had to apply more immeadiately, or we had bites within a minute.
